Do You Work On Rheem Systems?

Yes, and Our Install Team Fits New Ones As Well.

Most of what our HVAC team does on a Rheem is repair, because they have been going into Central Valley houses for decades and a lot of them are still running. Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning is a Rheem Pro Partner, so a new system can be ordered and fitted when that is where you land. Our technicians service Ruud as well, which matters more than it sounds and is explained below. Every one of them is NATE-certified, trained in-house by a master technician who has been in the trade since he was seventeen.

Who Builds A Rheem, And Why That Reaches Your Repair Bill

The company is a hundred years old this year and started nowhere near air conditioning. Two things in its history decide what a part costs you today.

YearWhat Happened
  • 1925The Rheem brothers start a galvanizing business in Emeryville, California, making steel drums.
  • 1930sThe company moves into water heating, which is still its largest business.
  • 1959Rheem buys Ruud, founded 1889 in Pittsburgh by Edwin Ruud, who built the first successful automatic water heater.
  • 1988Paloma Co., Ltd. of Nagoya, Japan buys Rheem. It has been Japanese-owned ever since.
  • 2007Head office moves to Atlanta, Georgia, where it is today.
  • 2019Rheem buys Friedrich, adding room and ductless equipment to the group.

Rheem is unusual among the majors in that it builds both halves of a house’s hot side. The same company that makes your outdoor unit very likely made your water heater, and it is one of the few manufacturers doing both at that scale. That is why a Rheem house is often a Rheem house throughout, and why one contractor can carry the whole thing.

Ownership is the part people get wrong. Paloma is a Japanese company, so Rheem is not American owned and has not been since 1988. The equipment is still built by American workers in American plants. Anyone who tells you the brand is American owned has it wrong, and anyone who tells you it is not American built has it wrong too.

The Ruud On The Other Side Of The Badge

Ruud and Rheem are one manufacturer wearing two names. A part off one generally fits the other, which is the practical difference between a system down for a week waiting on a back order and one running tonight. Our technicians work on both, so nobody at the parts counter is being guessed at.

What A Pro Partner Is, And What It Is Not

Pro Partner is Rheem’s contractor program. It gives our install team direct product access, factory training and co-op support. It is a supply and training relationship, not a skills certification, and our team would rather say so plainly than let it read as something it is not. The certification that covers the technician standing in your house is NATE.

What Rheem Builds

Rheem puts its name on nearly everything that heats or cools a house. Here is what falls under it and where each piece sits in a home like yours.

Air Conditioners

The outdoor unit pairs with an indoor coil and a furnace or air handler, which is how almost every cooling system in Modesto is put together. Rheem sells these across its Classic, Classic Plus, Prestige and Endeavor families, and the family decides the efficiency and how hard the compressor works to hold a temperature through a July afternoon. Our technicians repair them whoever fitted them, and fit new ones. Rheem’s range is on their air conditioners page.

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is the same outdoor unit working both directions, and it suits the Valley because our winters rarely punish one. Rheem’s heat pump range runs from basic single-stage units to fully modulating. If that is your system, our HVAC team repairs and replaces them too.

Gas Furnaces

Most Modesto homes pair cooling with an 80 or 90 percent gas furnace, and that number is how much of the fuel ends up as heat in the house rather than out of the flue. Rheem’s furnace line covers both. Ignitors, flame sensors and gas pressure are what our technicians see fail on the heating side.

Air Handlers And Coils

On an all-electric house the indoor half is an air handler, a cabinet holding a blower and a coil rather than a burner. Matching it to the outdoor unit is what holds the rated efficiency, which is why our installers quote both halves together. Rheem lists air handlers to pair with each outdoor line.

Packaged Systems

A gas pack or heat pump pack puts the whole system in one cabinet outside, usually on a slab, and they turn up often on older Valley housing stock. Rheem builds packaged systems in both forms, and our team services and replaces them.

Water Heaters

This is where Rheem started and where it is still biggest. If your outdoor unit says Rheem, walk into the garage and look, because the water heater often says it too. Our team repairs and installs tank water heaters. On tankless our technicians repair and maintain only and do not fit new tankless units, and you will hear that on the phone rather than at the door.

What Stands Out About Rheem

Three things on a Rheem behave differently from the average system, and each moves a number on a quote at some point. None are printed anywhere a homeowner would think to look.

One Company, Covering Both Halves Of The House

The fact. Rheem is one of very few manufacturers building both water heating and heating and cooling equipment at scale, and has done since the 1930s.

What it means for you.

If the badge outside and the badge in the garage match, one contractor with one parts relationship covers both. It also means a Rheem house tends to age together, so when the system is nearing the end it is worth asking about the water heater in the same visit rather than paying twice for someone to come out.

EcoNet Communicating Controls

The fact. Rheem’s higher lines run on EcoNet, where the thermostat and both halves of the system talk over a shared connection rather than ordinary thermostat wiring.

What it means for you.

The system tells our technicians what it has been doing, so a fault that would take an hour to chase shows up as a code at the wall. The trade is that the thermostat and the control boards are matched parts rather than shelf items, so a control failure is an order and not a same-afternoon swap.

The Registration Window

The fact. Rheem’s longer parts cover depends on the system being registered with the manufacturer shortly after installation. Miss that window and the cover drops to the base period. Labor sits outside both.

What it means for you.

Plenty of systems around Modesto are sitting on the short warranty because nobody filed the form. Whether yours was registered decides whether a compressor in year eight is a part on warranty or a bill in full, so our technicians check that before quoting rather than after.

How To Read The Numbers On Your Rheem

Two strings on the data plate tell you how big your system is and roughly when it was built. Here is how Rheem writes them.

RA14 036 AJ1NA

Read the digits in the middle. They are the capacity in thousands of BTU, so 036 is 36,000 BTU, and at 12,000 to a ton that makes it a three-ton system. The letters and digits at the front carry the family and the efficiency.

W3520 XXXXX

On most modern Rheem equipment the serial opens with a factory letter, then four digits. Those four are the week and the year, so W3520 is the thirty-fifth week of 2020.

  • EraHow The Date Reads
  • Most modern unitsA factory letter, then two digits for the week and two for the year.
  • 1980s to 1999Four digits with the order reversed, year first and then week, so 8815 is week 15 of 1988.
  • Anything elseRheem has used several formats across different plants and product lines.

Why two decoders disagree.

Rheem did not use one scheme everywhere, and the week and year sit in opposite order depending on the era, so two online decoders will hand you two different answers for the same string. Our technicians read it off the plate with the model family in front of them rather than trusting a lookup. If you only want to know whether the system is old enough to be worth replacing, the answer is usually visible without settling the exact week.

Common Rheem Repairs And What They Cost

Rheem equipment fails where most equipment fails, and the everyday parts are not brand-locked. The difference sits in a handful of components, and that is where a quote swings.

Start with the ordinary. Capacitors, contactors, ignitors, flame sensors and blower motors fail across every badge, they are stocked locally, and a Rheem costs no more for any of them. The same goes for a clogged condensate line, which is our most common summer call.

Then the exceptions. An EcoNet board or wall control is a matched part, not a universal one. An evaporator coil on a system old enough to be out of warranty is usually the repair that starts the replacement conversation. And a compressor is expensive enough on any brand that the registration question decides how that conversation goes.

One thing to check on an older one.

Rheem ran on R-410A for about twenty years, and from January 2025 the residential lineup runs on R-454B instead, under the AIM Act phase-down. Your existing system is not affected and stays serviceable. What changes is that a new R-454B outdoor unit and an old R-410A coil are not a pairing, so when the outdoor half fails on an older system the quote tends to cover both halves rather than one.

Repair It Or Replace It

Now that the serial number has given you a year, here is roughly how the answer falls on a Rheem. These bands are where our technicians start. What actually failed moves the line either way.

Under Ten Years

A repair is nearly always the answer, and the warranty is the first thing our team checks.

If the system was registered on time, parts are covered well into this band, so a significant failure can come down to labor on the invoice.

Ten To Fifteen Years

This is where it gets specific to the system in front of our technician.

An ordinary part on a maintained unit is money well spent. A coil leak is a different conversation, because the part is ordered and the base warranty has run out.

Over Fifteen Years

Most systems this age run on R-410A, which is getting dearer as the phase-down continues.

Our technicians will still repair one. What changes is that a large repair buys you time rather than years, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are buying before you spend.

You will hear which component went, what that component costs, what a new system would come to, and how much warranty is still standing. The choice after that is yours to make on figures.

What Our Team Does With Rheem Systems

Repair And Service

Our technicians diagnose it, price the repair before starting, and show you what they found rather than handing you a total at the door. The diagnostic is $99 flat and it does not come off the repair, because it pays for the technician’s time finding the fault. Same-day service on most in-season calls, and our team is on call at weekends until 9 PM.

New Systems

When a replacement is where you land, our install team orders Rheem through our Pro Partner account and fits it, or quotes it alongside the other lines Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning carries so you compare on one page. Residential pricing is flat-rate, so you see the number before anyone starts. Our installers size the system to what your house actually needs rather than matching whatever was there.

Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning has been family-owned since 2001 and is independently operated.

Questions Homeowners Frequently Ask About Rheem

Is Rheem made in America?

Rheem equipment is built in American plants by American workers. The parent company, Paloma, is Japanese, so the brand is American-built but not American-owned.

Who owns Rheem now?

Paloma Co., Ltd. of Nagoya, Japan, which bought Rheem in 1988. The head office is in Atlanta, Georgia.

Is Ruud the same as Rheem?

Same manufacturer, different badge. Rheem bought Ruud in 1959 and builds both, so many service parts carry across between them.

How long should a Rheem last?

Fifteen to twenty years from a correctly sized install. What ends one early is the setup, the run hours a Valley summer puts on it, or a coil nobody cleaned.

Do Rheem parts cost more than other brands?

Not the everyday ones. Capacitors, contactors and motors price the same as any brand. EcoNet control boards are the parts that cost more.

Reviews

Steve, the gentleman that came out to fix my air conditioner. He was very professional, very nice, just a pleasant person to be around. And he fixed my air conditioner very quickly. And it hasn’t ran this smooth and cool in years. Completely happy with every aspect. I would definitely use Dycus air-conditioning from now on. And very reasonable price. I think it was half the price of my last visit from a different company. Thank you Mr. Dycus

Forrest Clark

We’ve been with Dycus for many years and they never disappointed with their services. Maintenance is done regularly and when service is needed, they always expedite and get it fixed in short notice.

Purchased a Bosch Heat Pump/ AC unit in 2023. The installation was a bit tricky and there have been a few issues with the unit since, but Dycus has always come out quickly and worked diligently each time to ensure the unit was working as it should and that I was happy with the result. Being a small business owner myself, service after the sale is paramount and Dycus excels in this area. The front office people and the techs are very professional and know their stuff. Very happy to write this review.
