A Lennox system can look familiar from the outside while operating very differently from another Lennox built years earlier. Three details are especially useful when you own one.
Product Family Changes the Warranty
Lennox does not use one warranty for every system. Current basic coverage differs between the Dave Lennox Signature Collection, Elite Series, and Merit Series. For example, current Lennox information lists 10-year parts and compressor coverage for Signature Collection products, while Merit coverage is generally shorter.
Do not assume “Lennox warranty” tells you what is covered. The model, installation date, product family, and warranty certificate matter. Before paying for a major component, check the actual coverage attached to your equipment.
The Refrigerant Depends on Its Generation
Lennox is transitioning its newer whole-home equipment to R-454B, while its newer ductless lineup uses R-32. Existing R-410A equipment can remain in service, but the refrigerants are not interchangeable.
If an older Lennox needs refrigerant service, the technician needs to identify what refrigerant the equipment was designed for. A refrigerant change is not a simple swap from one bottle to another.
Registration Can Change Extended Coverage
Lennox offers extended warranty choices on qualifying equipment. In California, Lennox states that eligible equipment automatically receives the default parts-only Extended Limited Warranty, while homeowners have a 60-day window to select the alternative coverage that includes labor where available.
Warranty registration is worth checking before assuming you have no coverage. Lennox’s warranty lookup can use the equipment serial number and installation information to identify available coverage.
Find Out What Your Lennox Numbers Mean
The Lennox name tells you the brand. The model and serial numbers tell us which equipment you actually have.
These numbers can help identify the product family, system size, refrigerant, electrical requirements, approximate production date, and warranty record. Lennox also uses the serial number in its online warranty lookup.

A Lennox model number contains information about the specific system and its configuration.

So this model number tells a Dycus technician that the equipment is a Lennox Merit Series, two-stage, 3-ton air conditioner using R-454B refrigerant. Lennox documents this exact model-number structure in its 2026 ML17KC2 specifications.
WHAT DOES 036 MEAN?
On this Lennox equipment family, the three-digit capacity code identifies the nominal cooling size:
- 024 = 2 tons
- 036 = 3 tons
- 048 = 4 tons
- 060 = 5 tons
That can be useful when you are trying to determine the size of an existing Lennox system.
The code should still be checked against the complete model number. Lennox uses different nomenclature across different product families and generations.
WHEN YOUR LENNOX WAS BUILT
The serial number identifies the individual piece of equipment.
One Lennox-documented example looks like this:

Lennox also currently lists several possible serial-number formats, including:

Because Lennox has used more than one format, you should not assume every Lennox serial number can be decoded the same way.
COOLING EQUIPMENT · WHERE TO FIND THE LABEL
For a Lennox air conditioner or heat pump, look for the nameplate or equipment sticker near the outdoor unit’s service panel.
Lennox says the label normally has a white background with black lettering and contains both the model number and serial number.
FURNACES · CHECK INSIDE THE CABINET
Finding the label on a Lennox furnace can depend on the furnace type and installation position.
Lennox says it may be found:

The location can differ between 80% and 90% AFUE furnaces and between upflow, downflow, horizontal, and vertical installations.
AIR HANDLERS · LOOK FOR THE EQUIPMENT LABEL
Check the air handler cabinet for the model and serial number label. If the label is difficult to reach or requires removing an access panel, a technician can locate it during service.
Having the complete model and serial numbers available can also help when checking parts, equipment information, or warranty coverage.

A technician may ask for your Lennox model number before arriving because two units that look almost identical from the outside can have different:

A decoder written for an older R-410A air conditioner, for example, may not interpret a newer R-454B Lennox system correctly. Lennox’s current ML17KC2 equipment uses K in the model number to identify R-454B, while earlier ML14XC1 equipment used X for R-410A.

What Usually Goes Wrong With Lennox Systems
Lennox equipment is not immune to component failure. Capacitors, contactors, motors, control boards, coils, compressors, ignition components, sensors, and other parts can eventually need attention.
A smaller electrical or control repair can make sense on equipment that is otherwise in good condition. A compressor, coil, heat exchanger, or major refrigerant problem deserves a broader look at the system’s age, warranty, repair cost, and condition.
Refrigerant Is Part of the Conversation Now
Lennox’s 2025 product lineup transitioned to lower-GWP refrigerants, including R-454B for whole-home ducted equipment and R-32 for ductless systems. Existing R-410A equipment can remain in service and is not automatically required to be replaced because of the refrigerant transition.
That distinction matters for older Lennox owners. A refrigerant-related repair does not automatically mean replacement. The equipment’s age, refrigerant type, leak location, repair cost, and overall condition should be considered together.
Repair or Replace Your Lennox?
Age is one piece of the decision. The failed component, warranty status, repair cost, efficiency, and condition of the rest of the system can matter just as much.
Under 10 Years
Start with the repair.
A newer Lennox with a failed capacitor, contactor, motor, sensor, or control may have many useful years ahead. Warranty coverage can also reduce the cost of a major component, so check the equipment information before approving expensive work.
10 to 15 Years
Let the failed component drive the decision.
A smaller repair may still be a sensible investment. A compressor, coil, or other expensive component deserves a closer comparison between the repair cost and replacement cost, especially if other parts are beginning to show wear.
Over 15 Years
Compare the next repair with replacement.
An older Lennox does not need to be replaced simply because it has reached a certain birthday. But when a major component fails, the amount you are about to spend should be compared with what a new system would provide.
The useful question is not “How old is my Lennox?” It is “What will this repair buy me from here?”
